Mathematical models to predict the impact of COVID 19 and its evolution

Ikerbaque researchers from BCAM and UPV/EHU collaborate together with the Department of Health of the Basque Government and Osakidetza in modeling the dynamics of the COVID-19 disease.

José Antonio Lozano, director of the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics, BCAM, explains the work of modeling the dynamics of COVID-19. Using mathematical, statistical and artificial intelligence algorithms, they work to describe the impact of the pandemic and its evolution over time. They also prepare periodic reports with seven-day predictions of positive cases and hospital admissions for the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country.

Forecasting the needs of beds in Intensive Care Units is a task to which the Biscay company Sherpa also contributes, which has designed a predictive platform in record time. Xabier Uribe-Etxebarria explains what information they are providing to the Basque Government to help manage this unprecedented health crisis.
